LT31 front suspension

I have a 1989 LT31 Westfalia. The front suspension "bottoms" very easily - there is only 10-15mm clearance to the rubber bump stops. Is this common? [ I have looked at other vans, and they often have more clearance]
Can one perhaps fit stronger springs from a later van such as LT35 ?
